Job Description:

The Project Accountant will provide accounting and finance support to the Finance department and International Project Teams. They will be responsible for monitoring the progress of projects, investigating variances, approving expenses, and ensuring that project billings are issued to customers and payments collected.  The position will report to the Controller.


  • Ensure all invoices, including Time & Material, Fixed Priced, and Cost-Plus invoices, are accurate and entered properly into the accounting system. Research and resolve invoice discrepancies and issues with line managers and customers.
  • Follow up with project managers and clients to ensure timely payment of invoices.
  • Substantiates financial transactions by auditing documents prepared by accounts payable and payroll departments to ensure costs are entered in the proper period.
  • Coordinate with the Contracts Department ensuring contracts are properly funded and maintained in the accounting system.
  • Develop and implement accounting procedures by analyzing current procedures and recommend changes. Answers accounting procedure questions by researching and interpreting policy and regulations.
  • Maintain files and documentation thoroughly and accurately in accordance with company policy.
  • Produce standard and non-standard reports, including project variance reports and remaining funding available for projects.
  • Prepares the monthly burrowing base report.
  • Assist with month end closing by generating month end closing entries.
  • Compile information for external auditors, as required. This includes support for USAID contract audits.
  • Perform general accounts analysis and reconciliations of balance sheet line items
  • Perform such other accounting, financial, or other administrative tasks as may be required from time to time.

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting; or a bachelor’s degree in business with an emphasis in accounting.  
  • Detailed knowledge of project-based contracts.
  • Five years or more years of general accounting experience.
  • Prior experience in a government contracting environment. Knowledge of USAID contracts preferred.
  • Knowledge of general accounting procedures particularly as applied to general ledger and accounts receivable.
  • Must have excellent communication and writing skills.
  • Detail oriented, professional attitude, and reliable.
  • Must have the ability to use independent judgement.
  • Working knowledge of MS Excel, MS Word, and Adobe.  
  • Knowledge of government contract accounting systems preferred
  • Ability to work individually and as part of a team.
  • Ability to prioritize workload to meet and maintain deadlines.
