ARLINGTON – The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) recently awarded Nathan Associates Inc. the five year, $17M Central America Regional Trade Facilitation and Border Management (CA-RTFBM) Project, which will support economic integration and trade facilitation efforts in the Northern Triangle countries of El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras.

Through close engagement with national governments, the Central American Economic Integration Secretariat (SIECA), and other counterparts, the Project aims to address regional integration and trade facilitation challenges by increasing operational efficiency and harmonizing procedures at the borders, strengthening legal frameworks, boosting border management and private sector capacity, and improving border control capacity.

The Project will also build on the groundwork laid and successes achieved by Nathan’s former projects in the region, notably USAID’s Regional Trade and Market Alliances (RTMA) Project and USAID’s Regional Trade Facilitation Expansion (RTFE) Project. A key achievement of both projects was the installation of Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology at critical border points, which, coupled with other logistics improvements, reduced the time to clear export cargo at El Salvador’s borders by 42 percent.

“Nathan is very pleased and proud to partner with USAID, national and regional counterparts, and private sector stakeholders to assist El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras to further reduce trade time and costs and meet their trade facilitation commitments,” said Sue Chodakewitz, Nathan’s President and CEO. “Our decade-long presence and trusted relationships in the region allow for a unique understanding of the challenges and opportunities in the Northern Triangle; addressing the former and capitalizing on the latter will be foundational to achieving long-lasting and sustainable results,” she added.
