IndUS Business Journal, the only national business-to-business newspaper catering to the Indian and South Asian business
community in the United States, profiled Nathan Associates’ executive vice president, Dr. Lakhbir Singh, in its April 1, 2008 issue. Calling Dr. Singh the firm’s “right-hand man,” IndUS traced his rise from research assistant to the firm’s second highest position.
The Success of Quality
Nathan Associates hired Dr. Singh four years after he had come to the United States from New Delhi, equipped with undergraduate and graduate degrees in economics from Delhi University. To make ends meet while attending Howard University, Singh had been working at a pharmacy in Maryland. One of his professors, recognizing Singh’s brilliance, sent him to Nathan in 1976 to get a job suited to his abilities. He worked that summer as an intern, contributing to a major study and report for the Port of Los
Angeles. The thorough analysis and accurate numbers in the report—all attributable to Singh—astounded the client and landed Singh a full time position as a research assistant with the firm. Thirty years later he is second in command at Nathan, managing 10-20 antitrust litigation cases per year and supervising the research, analysis, and expert report for the cases.
And the Quality of Success
As his colleagues know, Singh’s dedication to quality drives his approach to research and analysis, case management, and staff mentoring. His love of the work itself—isolating relevant facts, creating economic models, achieving accuracy, and delivering concise analysis—is complemented by keen judgment of the client’s “big picture” and the pressing demands of litigation cases. Colleagues also recognize in Singh the humility unique to the highly competent. As he told IndUS, being promoted to executive vice president in 2002 “was very important to me because I always thought I may never reach a status like number two.”
