The ministers of the 21-member Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) organization recognize that data, particularly disaggregated by sex, are essential to the formulation of policies and reforms that can advance women’s economic participation. A milestone achievement, the Women and the Economy Dashboard, is a set of 75 indicators on the status of women in APEC’s member economies. It reflects APEC’s commitment to gauging the impact of reforms on women’s economic empowerment and inclusion in five areas selected by APEC’s Policy Partnership on Women and the Economy (PPWE):

  • Access to capital and assets
  • Access to markets
  • Skills, capacity building, and health
  • Leadership, voice, and agency
  • Innovation and technology

In developing the Dashboard, we conducted extensive study and far-reaching consultation with data experts and representatives of APEC’s member economies. For the five areas above we delineated 26 contributing factors which themselves are measured by one or more indicators drawn from highly credible international data sources, such as the United Nations, the World Bank, the International Labor Organization, the World Economic Forum, and the World Health Organization. The Dashboard will help policymakers prioritize capacity building throughout APEC economies and will inform each economy’s domestic goals. This downloadable report explains how the Dashboard was developed, provides technical notes and analysis, and sets forth expectations for use of the Dashboard.
