The Indian Gaming Industry Report authored by Principal Economist Alan Meister was recently cited in a front page story of the Wall Street Journal. The WSJ article discusses how the financial troubles of the Foxwoods Resort Casino have led the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation to debt-restructuring negotiations with lenders. The article also suggests that this situation may have negative repercussions regarding lending to tribes for future gaming developments, and that this may hamper the ability of some tribes to provide for their tribal members. Data from Dr. Meister’s annual study were used in a graphic showing the geographic dispersion of Indian gaming and identifying states in which Indian gaming has generated the most gaming revenue. Connecticut, which includes Foxwoods Resort Casino, ranked third among the 28 states in calendar year 2008.
