The Indian Gaming Industry Report, authored by Principal Economist Alan Meister, was recently cited in a New York Times article. The article discusses the decline of the gaming industry in Northern Nevada, particularly Reno, and largely attributes it to the growth of Indian gaming in Northern California. In drawing this conclusion, the Times cites Dr. Meister?s data on gaming revenue at California Indian gaming facilities to point out that California is the top Indian gaming state. The article also points to Dr. Meister?s conclusions regarding the reasons for the growth of California Indian gaming: relative distance to customer base; increased sized and quality of the facilities; and increased non-gaming amenities, such as hotels, restaurants, entertainment, and meeting space.
