State’s economists turn to Indian Gaming Report for data

To generate additional state revenue, Florida is considering legalizing commercial resort casinos. But there is debate over whether legalization would generate incremental revenue for the state given that the introduction of commercial resort casinos could have a negative impact on existing casino gaming. For example, the Seminole Tribe of Florida operates a number of gaming facilities but might not be legally obligated to continue making sizable payments to the state if commercial resort casinos are legalized. In addition, commercial resort casinos may divert business away from “racinos” slot machines at race tracks,which pay taxes to the state.

To inform the debate, state economists are turning in part to data from the Indian Gaming Industry Report, an annual publication authored by Dr. Alan P.
